The important factors of UPS Reduced Battery life

Table of Contents
Ambient temperature and storage of batteries
The higher the ambient temperature a battery is stored in the more likely the battery is to prematurely fail. This is because the higher the temperature the quicker the chemical reaction within the unit. This increase in reaction rate also increases both water loss.
The general rule is that for every 10°C increase over and above the recommended storage temperature, the service life of the battery drops by 50%. However, this is a constant state of battery storage and not temporary changes in temperature. Temporary changes have little to no real impact on the service life of a battery.
Intended use of batteries
UPS batteries for example have specialist functions to perform. These batteries are designed to provide large levels of power for short periods of time, no longer than a few minutes. For applications that require power for longer periods of time UPS batteries do not tend to be the most suitable power option, although there are steps that can be taken to increase the operational time limit a battery can run for.
Other factors that can affect the performance of a battery include the voltage of power inputted to the cells. Incorrect voltage applied to these batteries can cause the battery cells to overheat and ultimately fail.
Battery discharge
UPS batteries run in a discharge/charge cycle. Each battery is designed to operate a finite number of these cycles. However, if these batteries are not discharged fully before recharging the battery, the number of cycles the battery can operate decreases.
Battery charging
Batteries are designed to be charged at specific voltage rates recommended by the manufacturer. Incorrect charging can have a negative impact on the battery, causing damage and lowering the life of the battery.
