ITAR is the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, the United States regulation that controls the manufacture, sale, and distribution of defence and space-related articles and services as defined in the United States Munitions List (USML). Wholesalers, Contractors, Distributors, Third-party Suppliers, and Computer Software/Hardware Vendors are all sectors that are required to follow the ITAR standard. ITAR exists to track military and defence-sensitive material and to keep that material out of the hands of U.S. enemies.

If organisations fail to follow this standard, they can receive a fine of up to $500,000 per violation or a criminal fine of up to $1 million and/or 10 years imprisonment per violation.
