Case Study: Secure data destruction of a large-scale postal service’s IT equipment

Protecting sensitive data with secure data destruction

A nationwide postal service company required secure IT asset recycling and data destruction services for their redundant electronic devices.

S2S Group provided expertise and support to manage hundreds of redundant mobile phones over the course of four months, sourced from both business and consumer markets, ensuring secure data destruction and compliance, while responsibly disposing of devices that cannot be reused. This was especially important for this client as they handle large amounts of sensitive data daily, so it was critical to protect this from being compromised and avoid data leaks.

How we securely managed all IT Assets

  • All devices were first run through CheckMEND, a device certification tool used to verify if they are lawful to resell. Devices flagged by CheckMEND were quarantined in secure cages on-site, preventing unauthorised access or data breaches via secure data destruction.
    • Devices that passed the CheckMEND stage were then wiped using our partner Blancco Mobile, ensuring that the process was entirely compliant through our high data-erasure security standards.
      • Once all data was erased, each device was fully tested, graded and prepared for resale.
        • Resalable devices were sold, and the credit revenue was returned to the customer.
          • Devices that were iCloud/Google locked, physically damaged or could not be securely wiped were securely destroyed on-site; the materials from such devices were recycled to ensure we’re promoting a circular economy in every stage of the ITAD process.
          • How secure ITAD management supports businesses and the environment

Within the first four months of working with the postal service, S2S Group collected, assessed, and processed 1,800 redundant mobile devices.

By using CheckMEND verification, Blancco Mobile erasure, and secure storage throughout the process, the project delivered full compliance with secure data destruction, whilst meeting all required security and legal standards.

This gave our client complete peace of mind that important customer data was destroyed professionally and properly. Devices that could not be resold were sustainably and securely disposed of, supporting the circular economy and reducing e-waste, while resalable devices generated a financial return, transforming responsible ITAD into a revenue opportunity. This contributed towards the firm’s wider ESG objectives.

Reflecting on the success of the partnership, the on-site manager stated: “Partnering with S2S Group gave us confidence that our redundant devices were handled securely, compliantly, and that there was real value in investing in this process for our customers.”
