Maximising
ROI: Strategies for IT Asset Remarketing and Reuse

Effectively refurbish and reuse IT Assets

With more and more companies looking to increase the return of the IT assets they invest in, refurbish and reuse strategies are needed to manage the process from redundant equipment to new.

However, it is often missed that equipment can be refurbished and reused, either performing tasks as before, or repurposed elsewhere in the business.

Repurposing and reusing IT, a viable business option

When devices appear to reach the end of their lifecycle, they are traditionally destroyed to protect the organisation’s data security. This physical destruction for many businesses is often required to ensure adherence to both internal and externally set rules. However physical destruction is not always the only option available. Economically, unnecessary physical destruction of assets can lead to the wastage of valuable materials. For many organisations the assets they hold are capable of performing functions, therefore extending the lifecycle of the equipment.

To prepare an asset for repurposing it is advisable that the asset is first refurbished. This is not a process focused on the look of the asset either. Comprehensive refurbishing involves, assessment, disassembly, repair, cleaning, testing, and documentation.

When repurposing an IT asset, it is important to remember that after refurbishment those assets can either be used internally by the organisation in another area or then go through the remarketing process. Either way for repurposed assets to be reused correctly and efficiently, the data held on these devices needs to be completely erased.

Remarketing assets – Different to repurposing

IT asset remarketing the management process by which businesses follow to sell on redundant IT technology. Often businesses include IT asset remarketing as part of a wider lifecycle strategy. This is often to do the following:

  • Finance IT investments in the future.
  • Reduce electronic waste (WEEE)
  • Recover costs on assets bought
  • Asset management – Protecting your ROI

To ensure that assets retain value, either as assets to remarket or asset to reuse internally it is important to judge when it is time for replacement. Replacing an asset too soon risks overspend on new unnecessary equipment when the current asset estate functions well.

However, leave an asset working too long and there is a risk that there will be little to no resale value. To manage this process, assets need to be tagged, monitored and tested on a regular basis. So rather than IT being replaced based on arbitrary dates it is decision based on recorded performance.

S2S Group – Refurbish and reuse IT through Test & Clean

Organisations can save a substantial amount of money through refurbishing and re-using their IT electronic estate. The process of reusing, which involves refurbishing and redeploying existing equipment, presents a more cost-effective alternative compared to frequent purchases of new devices. By reusing electronic devices businesses contribute to a greener and more sustainable environment.

In addition, it enables companies to play an active role in reducing electronic waste, alleviating the burden on landfills, and promoting responsible e-waste management.

Before redeployment, these devices undergo rigorous testing and cleaning procedures, ensuring their optimal functionality and performance. This not only extends the lifespan of IT assets, but it also prevents premature disposal, maximising the return on investment.

Test & Clean – What is it?

The S2S Group Test & Clean scheme is intended to prevent reusable IT kit from being sent to landfills, by encouraging companies to send their assets to site for refreshment, refurbishment and redeployment.

To do this, S2S Group has a specialist Mobile and IT Team, which are experts in the handling of assets, testing, assessing, data erasing, and finally refurbishing them to look and function like new. Organisations can then take the option to reuse the refurbished equipment or purchase new from S2S Group’s stock.

    Specialist mobile Test & Clean

All mobile devices deployed from S2S Group are provided with all the accessories needed, including a protective phone case, glass screen protector, and charger. All mobile phones get deployed within a mobile phone box and secure packaging to ensure no damage is sustained in transit.

3 stages of Test & Clean

S2S Group is an industry leading IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) and management business. If your business requires a range of IT equipment lifecycle solutions including the management of data bearing assets and portable devices, please get in touch with our customer support experts. S2S Group is able to advise your company on a full range of topics and would be more than happy to discuss your unique requirements.

    Stage 1: Blancco Data Erasure

All assets received at S2S Group’s site get tagged to S2S Group’s Trakk-IT portal allowing customers to track their assets at each stage of the test and clean process.

With this tracking, all updates on the assets are uploaded, notifying the customer on repairs, and grading. Once tagged, all devices have their data irreversibly erased via Blancco’s Data Erasure software of which S2S Group is a gold partner.

    Stage 2: Asset Assessment

Once data is erased, each asset will be checked to see if all functions are working. If assets fail Blancco data erasure, they are stripped of their crucial components and recycled.

    Stage 3: Asset Processing

Each asset is then processed through S2S Group’s bespoke Work Bench 3 system and graded accordingly. The grades range from A to D. With A being in perfect condition and D being damaged (cracked screen/housing). If assets are damaged, specialist teams will repair these to function as required.

Test & Clean – The Benefits

Implementing a robust reuse strategy not only bolsters financial savings but also reflects a company’s commitment to environmental preservation. By reusing electronic devices, companies in the UK can reduce their carbon footprint and minimise the need for manufacturing new products, thereby lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Through responsible recycling practices, businesses can further divert electronic waste from landfills and help conserve valuable resources. By actively participating in the circular economy and embracing the principles of reuse, reduce, and recycle, companies can foster a more sustainable business model while enjoying substantial cost reductions.
